Professional Biography

I have been a lawyer since 1977. For the first part of my legal career I was
on the legal staff of the Department of Taxation & Finance of the State of
New York, giving tax advice on all New York taxes, trying tax cases, and drafting tax legislation.

I am the proprietor of the Law Office of Laurence E. Stevens, specializing in immigration law of the United States. Drawing on my tax background, I also advise non-citizens on their New and federal income tax obligations.

I am an accomplished legal writer; my written and spoken legal advice is free of “legalese.”

I am a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association; the Legal Aid Society of Northeast New York, the Legal Project of New York, and the Guilderland Chamber of Commerce. I also speak on immigration law to groups in the Capital District.

For twenty years I have been happily married, and am the proud father of a son and a daughter. In the winter I like cross-country skiing; in the summer, I like hiking; in all seasons, I like watching funny movies.

Starting the Consultation:

When you contact me we will arrange a time to fully discuss your case. This first discussion usually lasts one to two hours. When we are done I will have a good idea of what your next steps might be. I charge an hourly fee for this first consultation, and follow-up research when necessary. If I see that you are eligible for immigration benefits, and you wish to apply for them, then I will quote you a firm legal fee for my legal work, tell you the government filing fees, and estimated time to completion.
